Ton Vranken

Ton Vranken

Ton Vranken was born 1947 in Geulle, Limburg, the Netherlands. Since 1980 he has developed into a prominent painter in the poetic realist style, adding to it a very personal touch. He strives to idealise the landscape, leaving photographic reality behind him. He finds his inspiration in the landscape where he was born and raised, the undulating hills of the south of Holland, with its characteristic tall fruit trees, hedgerows, wooden fenceposts, or the pebble-strewn bed of the river Maas. His attempt to portray the essence of the Maas valley landscape has become the hallmark of his work.

( 1977 quotation from Mr Lei Alberigs, former director of the Van Bommel Van Dam art gallery in Venlo, Holland )

I  paint exclusively in oil on canvas, applying as many as five to ten layers in the process. Some of the paintings have involved 600 hours of work.
